20 Pounds

Yesterday Dorothy noticed that Christopher is focusing on objects and reaching for them. It’s amazing to watch… You can see the little wheels turning in his head as he slowly opens his hand and wraps his fingers around his rattle.
He’s also pretty clearly recognizing people now. I watch him as he’s playing, and he’s not smiling or cooing. But when someone comes to where he can see them, he grins and makes all kind of noise.
Quicktime 7 is out now for both Windows and Mac. One nice thing about it is that it supports H.264, which is a high compression codec for video. This is how I encode all my movies, so if you want to see any of them, download it here.
I’ve put up a bunch of pictures and movies for month 2. I think I’ll do months now instead of weeks…
Christopher’s stomach is doing better now, so we’re going to try switching him off of the $8/day Alimentum formula to the $4/day Good Start formula. I’ve talked to some people who said that it worked well for them, and it will certainly help the bank account…
The last few days Christopher seems to understand that his hand is attached to his body. He looks at the stuff we have dangling above him, and from time to time whacks something with his hand. He still hasn’t grabbed anything yet.
He’s also smiling at us more, and making a lot of noise. Sometimes he spews out full sentences of gibberish. Mostly when he wants something now, instead of crying, he yells out. That’s good news, since it indicates that he’s probably hearing okay.
He’s also putting on a lot of weight still… Almost a pound a week so far. (Yes, that makes him 20 lbs at almost 3 months.) He’s also starting to outgrow his 6-9 month clothing. ![]()
So we took Christopher to the urinary tract doctor to get a “reflux” test for his urinary tract. Basically they put radioactive dye in his bladder, and see if it leaks back up toward his kidneys. They wanted to do this to see if he has a congenital problem that would explain why he got a urinary tract infection.
The good news is that the test results were good, so I guess his UTI was just a fluke. Hopefully this is the last time for a while that we’ll have to take him to the doctor.
Sorry I haven’t blogged in a while. Been very busy starting up a new course, trying to get two papers submitted, and doing service for my research community.
I’ll try to post a couple updates about the baby today, as well as some photos and movies.
