Christopher’s Growth Chart

Friday, October 28th, 2005

Check out Christopher’s growth chart so far:

The lower set of curves are the percentage norms for weight, and the upper set of curves are the norms for height. So at each of his checkups, he has one point plotted above for his height, and one plotted below for his weight.

At four months he’s at something like the 120% for height and weight both. The good news is that his height is catching up with his weight. In the previous checkups he was only at 99% for height. :)

First Tooth!

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

Christopher’s first tooth is starting to come in! No wonder he’s been drooling and fussy lately!

Actually, I think the first diagnosis belongs to Dorothy’s grandmother. She was here this past weekend and thought that might be what was going on.

Hearing Update

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Today we went to an audiologist in Richmond for another hearing test. Their equipment can filter out the sounds of his breathing. Of course, he was wide awake when it was time for the test, so we had to hang out until after lunch so that he would go to sleep.

Unfortunately, the test was not able to verify that his ears are working correctly. The audiologist also tried a “brain scan” test, but that didn’t work either. Finally, she tried some “behavioral testing”, where we pressed a noisemaker against his head behind his ears.

All of these failed, but it doesn’t mean that he’s profoundly deaf. First, he could have fluid in his ear that is preventing the first kind of test from succeeding. Second, he was awake during the second test, which works better if he is asleep. Finally, he’s too young for behavioral testing.

Luckily, we were able to see the ear, nose, and throat doctor the same day. He suggested that we first make sure that there’s no fluid in there. So he prescribed some antibiotics, and said that he may put tubes in Christopher’s ears after the antibiotics are done. (I’m not sure why we need to take the medicine, since he doesn’t have an ear infection…)

I suspect that there’s fluid in Christopher’s ears, but not enough to be the only problem. I’m betting that he has an inner ear problem. The good news is that something like cochlear implants is covered by insurance, and can be installed soon, before he starts to form language skills.

Rolled Over for the First Time

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

Today on his four month birthday, Christopher rolled over! Dorothy saw him do it on the bed, and then later he flipped over while in his crib.

Grabs His Toes

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Lately he’s been grabbing his toes, especially during changings. It’s so funny. He grabs one foot, then the other, then tries to eat his toes. When that doesn’t work, he yells at them. Those wily toes!

Flip

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

Christopher flipped over today. He was pushing against the boppy, and then lifted his legs so that he could flip over. There’s a movie of it in the four month photo album:
